Ordering Books

This page is about how to order books without the use of a credit card with particular attention to Guyana. It may have relevance to those in other developing nations.

Guyana has limited access to books - the few bookshops have limited supply of CSI textbooks relevant to UG. In addition, there are no VISA credit cards available in the country making internet purchasing difficult. Fortunately, the ease of ordering over the internet can be attained from Guyana with a speedy service at certain sites such as Amazon.co.uk. For instance, UG library staff were astounded when the G$300,000 of CSI books I ordered arrived within two weeks of the cheque being sent. How does this work?

Browsing for Books

Basically, if you see a book here that you like, click on the link to go to the Amazon website. It will show you reviews of the books and pricing information. If you would like to purchase it click on the Shopping basket icon and it will be added. From there you can continue browsing through books.

If you wish to purchase books you will be asked to provide some personal information. This includes an email address - so HAVE ONE READY. If you haven't already got one, free ones can be obtained from mail.yahoo.com. You can also return to this website and browse for more books once you have signed up. It can save money on postage to buy a number of books at once.

Completing The Order

When you decide to order the items in your shopping Basket you will be asked for various options - including delivery and gift options. Choose the AirMail option (the only one available really). The other thing is to wait for the entire order being ready before dispatch - this will lower the costs for shipping.

Payment is the tricky option. Here, as we have no credit card we have to choose the 'Pay By Cheque' option. (We will actually be paying by Bankers Draft). The website will then give you a page with the following pieces of information:

  1. The Order Number
  2. The amount you have to pay (in pounds)
  3. The Address to send your Bankers Draft
  4. The Payees name
Save this page, or write them down. Then go to a local bank (Scotiabank is good for this) and ask for a Bankers Draft in UK currency for the required amount made payable to the Payee name. Write your email address (as supplied to amazon) and your Order Number on the back and send it to the Postal Address.
